Notes
  • Using a Debian 6 kernel is recommended (via pygrub or advanced.conf). See our howto linked below
  • Uses grub-legacy (Grub 1) instead of Grub 2 as boot loader
  • A remote desktop session can be created using vnc4server: # vnc4server :1
  • Do NOT run vnc4server as root, but you can copy /root/.vnc/xstartup if you want your session to use the Gnome Desktop. Tunneling vnc traffic over ssh is also recommended for additional security.
Changes
  • /etc/gdm/gdm.conf allows local root logins; the original is at /etc/gdm/gdm.conf.save
  • Customized /etc/rc.local to recreate ssh keys on first boot and create /boot/grub/device.map if necessary
