CentOS VNC Guide

As of the CentOS 5.6 release, vnc is no longer enabled by default in our Gnome images and templates. However all of the required packages and scripts are still available. To enable a VNC desktop on display 1 simply execute the following as root inside your VM:

# chkconfig xvnc on

The desktop can be accessed from a remote client as follows (use the vnc client of your choice). A login window will appear allowing you to login as a non-privileged user.

# vncviewer ip_of_virtual_machine:5901

Notes:

  • For security reasons, remote root logins are disabled. See /etc/gdm/custom.conf AllowRemoteRoot
  • For additional security, we advise implementing vnc over an ssh tunnel. The vnc access described above is unencrypted.
