Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 Images And Templates

Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS was released yesterday. We have re-revved all of the lightweight and desktop Lucid images and templates. This brings in all package updates to date -- no other configuration changes have been made. Please follow the links to download:

CentOS 6 on SolusVM, Part II (IMPORTANT)

The kernel currently bundled in the CentOS 6.0 templates is vmlinuz-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6. As noted in the previous story there are upstream EL6 kernels that are not in the CentOS package repo yet. Unfortunately, the newer upstream kernels have made a change that is likely to impact users of the templates. As of kernel 2.6.32-131, all sda* device nodes that appear in your vm***.cfg will be remapped to xvde* inside the vps. The previous behavior had been to map sda* to xvda*.

Scenario: a SolusVM vps is updated to the new kernel and rebooted. If the vm***.cfg file is using sda* devices the vps will not boot. The vps' kernel will see the root device as /dev/xvde1 but grub.conf and fstab are configured with /dev/xvda1.

Solution: Do not allow SolusVM to use sda* device nodes when it creates the vm***.cfg for a CentOS 6 vps; sda is no longer appropriate for CentOS 6 and this updated block device mapping code makes it actually harmful. You can force SolusVM to use xvda* when generating the cfg file by using the XENPVOS option in advanced.conf. We highly recommend that you start doing this now to future proof your vpses before the kernel update appears!

CentOS 6 on SolusVM

CentOS 6 uses a newer kernel than CentOS 5 (obviously). The kernel currently bundled in the templates is vmlinuz-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6 with two newer 2.6.32 kernels in the pipeline that will presumably be released in the 6.1 tree if not sooner. For SolusVM users you will find that CentOS v6 templates will no longer work with the default SolusVM domU kernel, which is still at version 2.6.18. There are extensive notes on overriding the default kernel under SolusVM, not only for CentOS but for all the templates we distribute.

CentOS 6.0 Images and Templates Available For Download

The CentOS project released version 6.0 yesterday; we have bundled lightweight images for Xen, XCP, VMWare, KVM and SolusVM on x86 and x86_64. Additional downloads (Desktops) will be available as the week goes on. Update July 13th: 32 and 64-bit Gnome Desktops for all platforms except XCP are available now.

From the release announcement:
"Since upstream has a 6.1 version already released, we will be using a Continous Release repository for 6.0 to bring all 6.1 and post 6.1 security updates to all 6.0 users, till such time as CentOS-6.1 is released itself."

Updated Scientific Linux 6.0 Images Available For Download

We have re-revved all of the Scientific 6.0 images: this brings in all packages updates as well as tweaks and improvements described below. The impending release of CentOS 6.0 templates will be based on the same build scripts and configuration.

Arch Linux 2011-07 Images and Templates

Downloads of 64-bit Arch Linux (Xfce Desktop and CLI versions) are now available for Xen, VMWare and KVM. As with Gentoo, Arch implements a rolling release. This is the first release of Arch Linux on this site.

Gentoo 2011-07 Images and Templates

We have brought the 64-bit Gentoo images and templates up to date. Gentoo uses a rolling release instead of formal version numbers so we have dubbed this the 2011-07 release. Downloads are now available for Xen, VMWare, KVM and SolusVM PV. We are no longer planning 32-bit templates with Gentoo but the old x86 templates will remain in the repository.
